France publishes new list of species authorized for hunting

The French government has published a new official list of species classified as “espèces susceptibles d’occasionner des dégâts” (ESOD), or species likely to cause damage. This triennial list authorizes the hunting, trapping, and capturing of various animals to protect agricultural activities.

Included in the decree are animals such as foxes, martens, weasels, and several bird species, including the rook, carrion crow, magpie, Eurasian jay, and starling. Some species, like the weasel and marten, may be trapped year-round under specific conditions, such as proximity to professional livestock or apiary sites.

The Ligue de protection des oiseaux (LPO) has strongly criticized the decision, labeling it a “biological irrationality” and an “economic nonsense.” LPO President Allain Bougrain-Dubourg argued that the cost of eradicating these species is four times higher than the actual damage they cause. He also noted the ecological importance of these animals, such as the jay’s role in forest regeneration. The LPO has announced its intention to file an appeal with the Conseil d’État to contest the decree.
