France records hottest summer since 1900 amid heatwave deaths
France has experienced its hottest summer since records began in 1900, according to Environment Minister Monique Barbut. Data from Météo-France indicates the average summer temperature reached 24 degrees Celsius, which is 3.6 degrees above the normal level.
The extreme heat has had severe human and environmental consequences. Santé publique France reported that a significant heatwave between June 17 and July 2 resulted in 5,764 excess deaths, representing a mortality increase of over 36 percent. While seniors aged 75 and older accounted for two-thirds of these deaths, increased mortality was observed across all age groups from 15 years old upward.
Environmental impacts included a severe drought with a rainfall deficit of nearly 40 percent, leading to widespread forest fires. In the Bordeaux region, these fires forced approximately 250,000 residents to evacuate their homes. The season was also characterized by 53 days of heatwaves and record-high sea temperatures along the French coast and Corsica.
