Europe faces extreme heat and storms with over 30,000 excess deaths

Europe is facing severe consequences from extreme summer weather, including record-breaking heatwaves and intense storms. Preliminary data from the EuroMomo platform estimates over 32,000 excess deaths across the continent between mid-June and mid-August. In Germany alone, the Robert Koch Institute reported approximately 14,000 heat-related deaths through early August.

In France, meteorological records show an unprecedented number of stations exceeding 40°C, with 573 stations hitting this threshold—surpassing the heatwaves of 2003 and 2019. Health officials in France have highlighted that poorly insulated housing is a major contributing factor to mortality during these spikes.

Beyond heat, severe storms and flooding have caused significant disruption. In Austria, intense storms led to widespread flooding and property damage. In France, heavy rains and storms triggered orange-level weather alerts in southern departments, leading to flight cancellations in Corsica and evacuations of outdoor accommodations.

In response to these climate challenges, agricultural technology is being utilized to protect crops. The Voen Peak system has demonstrated effectiveness in regulating temperatures in orchards, reducing heat by an average of 1°C and up to 2.6°C during peak heat periods.
