France repair bonus system incentivizes appliance maintenance
France's repair bonus system, established in late 2022 to combat planned obsolescence, provides financial incentives to consumers to repair rather than replace household items and electronics.
The program offers fixed discounts on repair bills, such as 60 euros for televisions, 50 euros for washing machines or computers, and 25 euros for smartphones or ovens. To qualify, consumers must use a repairer holding the QualiRépar label, which serves as a guarantee of competence.
Under the system, the bonus is automatically deducted from the invoice. The repair fund is managed by Ecosystem and other eco-organizations. Local businesses, such as Sirguey Ménager in Haute-Saône, report that the initiative has attracted new customers by making repairs significantly more affordable compared to purchasing new equipment.
