France reports 10.9% rise in over-indebtedness filings

The Banque de France has reported a significant rise in over-indebtedness cases, with filings increasing by 10.9% during the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. Specifically, in July 2026, the number of filings rose by 2.7% year-over-year.

Related financial indicators show a 3.7% increase in new registrations to the FICP (national database for individual credit repayment incidents). Conversely, there has been a decline in certain areas, including a 13.0% drop in new registrations to the FCC (central check file) and a 13.2% decrease in designations for the right to an account. Additionally, requests for financial inclusion information and support through the Banque de France's multichannel services rose by 7.3%.

To manage potential debt crises and avoid formal over-indebtedness filings, experts suggest several technical levers. These include obtaining written reasons for credit consolidation refusals, checking for errors in FICP records, and negotiating amicable settlements with creditors, such as requesting payment deferrals or contract renegotiations.
