Additionally, the elderly have been particularly vulnerable to accidents in private swimming pools, often due to hydrocution or exceeding physical limits when entering cold water on hot days.

Beyond drowning, the summer heat has had a broader impact on public health. A provisional report from Santé publique France indicates 7,300 excess deaths during the summer of 2026. While hospitalizations remained manageable, there has been a concerning rise in deaths occurring at home, particularly among the elderly.
