France reports first locally transmitted chikungunya case in 2026
France's public health agency, Santé publique France, confirmed the first autochthonous chikungunya infection on the mainland, identified in a resident of Tarn (Occitanie). The case marks the first detection of local chikungunya transmission in France for 2026. At the same time, a second autochthonous West Nile virus infection was recorded in Bouches‑du‑Rhône (Provence‑Alpes‑Côte d'Azur), following an earlier case detected in mid‑July in Pyrénées‑Orientales.
Both viruses are spread by the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), which is now widespread across the country. Between 1 May and 26 July 2026, French health authorities reported 87 imported chikungunya cases, 261 dengue cases and 9 Zika cases. By contrast, the previous year saw more than 800 locally transmitted chikungunya cases, 29 dengue cases and 62 West Nile fever cases across 17 departments, including the first occurrences in Île‑de‑France and Normandy. Two additional autochthonous dengue cases were reported in Tarn and Hérault during the same period.
