France mandates psychotech testing for suspended drivers
In France, a psychotechnical test is compulsory for any driver whose licence has been cancelled, suspended or invalidated. The assessment must be carried out in a centre that holds a prefectural approval; centres without this accreditation produce no legally valid result.
The test session lasts about an hour and begins with a short interview by a psychologist. It is followed by computer‑based exercises that evaluate coordination, reaction time, sustained attention and logical reasoning. Psychologists must be registered with an ADELI number issued by the regional health agency, confirming their qualification.
After the session, the psychologist prepares a report that is sent directly to the relevant prefecture. Only the prefecture’s decision on the report determines whether the licence can be restored. The centre may email a summary to the candidate, but that document has no administrative weight. Processing of the report typically takes ten to thirty days, though it can extend beyond a month during busy periods.
Candidates must bring a valid identity document, the licence (or the official withdrawal notice) and the test invitation. Failure to present the required paperwork or to attend an approved centre results in the test being invalid and must be repeated.
