France student protests spark international debate after Trump claims Islam and migration are the cause

Massive student-led protests are sweeping across France, with demonstrators demanding improved school funding, better infrastructure, and more teachers. On Tuesday, October 6, participation reached between 256,000 and 450,000 people nationwide, including approximately 56,000 in Paris. The unrest has led to significant clashes with security forces, resulting in 488 arrests in a single day and over 6,000 total arrests since mid-September, the majority of whom are minors.

U.S. President Donald Trump criticized the demonstrations on Truth Social, claiming the unrest is not about schools but is instead a result of “out-of-control mass migration” and an attempt by Islam to “take over” the country. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot responded to these comments, stating that France must write its own story rather than allowing others to interpret its reality.

The situation has turned violent in several areas, with at least 24 schools reported looted or burned. Reports of police brutality have intensified following incidents where students suffered severe injuries, including one 15-year-old who lost a hand due to a police grenade. In response to the escalating tension, the French government has taken steps such as banning certain stun grenades and suspending classes in some secondary schools.
