France restaurant bankruptcies rise amid sector decline

The French restaurant sector is facing significant economic pressure, characterized by a rise in bankruptcies and a decline in overall revenue. Since the beginning of the year, approximately 5,000 restaurant businesses have filed for insolvency, representing a 7% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

Data indicates that traditional dining revenue has dropped by an average of 6.5%, with declines observed in 95 out of 98 departments. This trend suggests a structural reorganization of the market rather than a temporary downturn. For every five restaurants that close, only about four new ones open, leading to a net reduction in the total number of establishments.

Industry experts and economic observatories, including the UMIH and the Ordre des experts-comptables, note that businesses are struggling to adapt to increased competition, more selective consumers, and economic models that no longer align with current market realities. Factors such as soaring costs and extreme weather conditions, including heatwaves that discourage dining, have further exacerbated the instability of many establishments.
