France retail sector faces hundreds of millions in losses after riots

Massive protests and riots across France, driven by rising living costs and inflation, have resulted in hundreds of millions of euros in losses for the retail sector. Alexandre Bompard, CEO of Carrefour and Chairman of the French Federation of Commerce and Distribution, stated that Carrefour alone expects losses in the tens of millions of euros, with 50 of its stores damaged. Nationally, approximately 1,500 retail outlets have been impacted.

The demonstrations, which drew an estimated 550,000 participants including 110,000 in Paris, escalated into violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement. Radical groups engaged in looting, arson of public transport stops, and vehicle destruction. In response, police utilized tear gas, stun grenades, and water cannons.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported that 1,800 individuals have been detained and over 500 police officers and firefighters sustained injuries. Local officials in Paris, Limoges, Marseille, and Lyon noted that law enforcement resources were stretched thin during the unrest.
