France retirement rules to change in September 2026
New retirement regulations in France, set to take effect in September 2026, are introducing significant changes to pension calculations and early retirement eligibility. For those born in 1964 or early 1965, the required number of quarters for a full pension is set at 170, while those born later in 1965 may require 171. By 1966, the threshold increases to 172 quarters.
Changes to early retirement for long careers will offer more flexibility. Notably, parents—particularly mothers—can now use up to two quarters related to maternity or childcare to meet early retirement requirements. This measure aims to help those with interrupted careers reach the necessary thresholds without extending their working lives.
Even without traditional employment, individuals may qualify for pensions through specific mechanisms. Registration with France Travail can validate up to six quarters, and the AVPF system allows parents at home to accumulate quarters via contributions from the CAF. Additionally, experts advise retirees to verify their Agirc-Arrco points and career statements against pay slips, as errors in pension calculations have been noted.
