France retirement systems: La Poste and general pension structures

Retirement planning in France involves navigating distinct systems based on employment status and administrative structures. For employees of La Poste, the applicable pension scheme depends on whether they were recruited as civil servants or private-sector employees.

Civil servants at La Poste fall under the State's civil and military pensions code, with benefits calculated based on the gross index salary of their last six months of service. Private-sector employees contribute to the general social security scheme for basic retirement and Agirc-Arrco for supplementary pensions.

On a broader level, the general retirement system is managed through a centralized and regional structure. The Caisse Nationale d’Assurance Vieillesse (CNAV) provides national oversight for the basic retirement of the private sector, independent workers, and public contractors, while also managing insured individuals in the Île-de-France region. Outside of Paris, regional branches known as Carsat act as the local points of contact for managing pension claims and services.
