France school climate adaptation budget cut to 16 million euros
The French government has significantly reduced its emergency budget for adapting schools to climate change. Originally announced as a 60 million euro plan to benefit 12,500 schools, the budget has been cut to 16 million euros. The 40 million euro difference has been reallocated to an electrification plan focused on heat pumps and electric vehicles.
As a result of the funding reduction, the number of participating schools has dropped from 12,500 to 2,500. Furthermore, the remaining funds are reportedly designated for energy audits rather than direct physical renovations.
In response to increasing heatwaves, the Haute-Garonne Departmental Council is implementing its own adaptation plan for 123 middle schools, serving approximately 69,000 students. Council President Sébastien Vincini identified ecological transition as a top priority to ensure student success despite rising temperatures.
