France school sexual violence questionnaire sparks controversy

A planned initiative to distribute sexual violence questionnaires to 11 million students in France, ranging from kindergarten to high school, has drawn significant criticism from educators, parents, and unions. The program, announced by Education Minister Édouard Geffray, aims to identify sexual violence within both public and private schools.

Critics, including the SNES-FSU union and parent associations, have raised concerns regarding the management of student responses and the adequacy of resources. Key issues include the potential for inadequate anonymity, the complexity of handling sensitive disclosures, and a perceived lack of professional support, such as school nurses, social workers, and psychologists. There are also concerns that requiring parental authorization could prevent children from reporting domestic violence.

The Independent Commission on Incest and Sexual Violence against Children (Ciivise) estimates that approximately 160,000 children are victims of sexual violence annually in France. Unions have called for more robust training and better coordination to ensure that the process does not become a mere political communication tool and that vulnerable students are properly protected.
