Macron secures Gulf diesel agreements to stabilize French energy supplies

French President Emmanuel Macron has secured significant fuel supply commitments from several Gulf nations during a diplomatic tour aimed at mitigating soaring energy costs and domestic social unrest in France.

Through agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, France has secured an additional 200,000 tonnes of diesel per month. When combined with existing commitments from Saudi Arabia, France’s total secured monthly diesel volume reaches 295,000 tonnes, representing just over 10% of its monthly consumption. TotalEnergies will organize these deliveries.

In addition to diesel, Kuwait has committed to supplying diesel and kerosene to the French overseas territories of Mayotte and Réunion via Oman to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. During his visit to Qatar, Macron also concluded a gas agreement intended to bolster long-term energy security.

Beyond energy, the tour involved high-level security and diplomatic discussions. In Riyadh, Macron met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss regional stability and maritime security. In Doha, Macron and the Emir of Qatar issued a joint statement calling for freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the implementation of a ceasefire in Gaza.
