France sees 7.1% increase in burglaries amid summer surge
Official statistics from the Ministry of the Interior indicate a 7.1% increase in burglaries in France compared to the same period last year. During July, authorities recorded 18,675 break-ins across the country, which represents an increase of 1,200 incidents over the previous year.
The rise in crime is particularly notable during the summer vacation period, as residences and businesses are often left vulnerable. While the Ministry describes the long-term trend as stable based on data since late 2024, seasonal cycles traditionally see a concentration of thefts during school holidays.
In Lyon, specifically within the 6th arrondissement, local business owners are reporting a surge in repetitive burglaries. Merchants have expressed frustration over rapid, violent thefts that result in significant property damage and financial loss. In response to the perceived lack of security, local business owners have launched a petition requesting increased police patrols and the installation of additional video surveillance cameras.
