France sees decline in foreign translated novels for 2026 literary season

The 2026 French literary season (Rentrée littéraire) is seeing a notable decline in the number of foreign novels being published. While the total number of new releases is slightly down to 461 titles compared to 484 the previous year, the shift is primarily driven by a reduction in translated works.

French domestic production remains stable with 344 titles, but translated foreign literature has dropped to 117 works, down from 140 in 2025. Industry observers suggest this trend is due to the high costs associated with negotiating rights and paying translators in a strained book market. Consequently, publishers are opting for safer, established French authors rather than risking investments on unknown international voices.
