France sees improved payment discipline amid rising business failures

Recent economic data for France reveals a complex landscape of improving payment discipline alongside rising business insolvencies. According to a study by Altares, payment delays in France have improved significantly in the second quarter of 2026, reaching the best levels seen in three years. Approximately 49.7% of companies are now paying suppliers on time, compared to 45.2% a year prior. The average delay has dropped to 12.3 days, performing better than the European average of 13.1 days.

However, reports from BPCE L’Observatoire highlight severe underlying pressures on the French entrepreneurial landscape. Business failures are projected to reach 71,000 by the end of 2026, a rise from previous forecasts. This surge in insolvencies threatens nearly 300,000 jobs. Analysts attribute this instability to rising credit costs, increased cash flow debt, and weakening demand, noting that the real estate and commerce sectors remain particularly vulnerable.
