France: Nearly 1,000 arrests during nationwide protests
Approximately 410,000 people participated in nationwide demonstrations across France on Saturday to protest rising living costs, social inequality, and public service cuts, particularly in education. While many protests were peaceful, clashes broke out in several cities, including Paris, Marseille, Nantes, Rennes, Tours, Bordeaux, Dijon, Grenoble, and Toulouse.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported nearly 1,000 arrests, noting that the figure significantly exceeds the 385 arrests recorded the previous week. Nuñez attributed most incidents to far-left groups, though far-right militants were also present in Nice and Montpellier, where they reportedly confronted left-wing groups or protected businesses.
Authorities deployed 70,000 police officers and gendarmes to manage the unrest. Law enforcement utilized tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds during confrontations. In Paris, at least 110,000 people gathered to protest economic conditions.
