France sees record growth in associative sector
France is experiencing a record level of associative activity, with 83,430 new associations created last year according to a study by Recherches et Solidarités (R&S). The country currently hosts approximately 1.6 million active associations, which represent between one-third and 40% of all associations within the European Union.
These organizations are sustained by an estimated 13 to 15 million volunteers. While the typical volunteer profile is a highly educated urban woman with an average age of 50, data from Injep indicates a trend toward a younger volunteer base and a decline in participation within rural areas.
Associations play a critical role in French society, ranging from food banks and humanitarian aid to literacy and professional integration. Many also implement public policies for which they receive state remuneration, particularly in the social sector.
