France sees rise in cryptocurrency-linked kidnappings and extortion

A rising trend of kidnappings and extortions targeting cryptocurrency holders is emerging in France. In a recent incident in Nice, two masked men held a mother and son captive in their home to steal a cryptocurrency account valued at $25,000. The attackers seized passports, wallets, and mobile devices, one of which contained the access codes for the digital assets.

The National Anti-Organized Crime Prosecutor's Office (PNACO) has recorded 135 kidnappings or attempted kidnappings linked to cryptocurrencies in France. Data indicates an upward trajectory in these crimes, with parliamentary inquiries noting approximately 60 attacks in 2025 compared to 40 the previous year.

Criminal networks often identify targets by aggregating data from leaks, professional sites, and social media. Information from tax management services or LinkedIn profiles can reveal a person's involvement in blockchain technology, making them potential targets for organized crime groups seeking digital wealth.
