France sees surge in slow tourism as domestic travel preference hits 61%

A recent Sofinscope/OpinionWay barometer shows that 61 % of French households plan to stay within France for their summer holidays, boosting the emerging "slow tourism" trend. Inspired by the 1980s slow‑movement, slow tourism emphasizes soft mobility, longer stays, authentic experiences and heritage preservation, with options such as night trains, canal boats, hiking, farm stays and tented accommodation.

Booking’s Travel & Sustainability report indicates that 53 % of French travellers now aim to avoid contributing to overtourism. Interest in eco‑responsible lodging has risen, with the 2024 Interface Tourism Insights study finding 16.7 % of travellers prioritising sustainable accommodation, up from 12.6 % the previous year. In France, transport accounts for three‑quarters of tourism‑related greenhouse‑gas emissions, representing 11 % of national emissions, while train ridership and cycling tourism continue to set new participation records.
