France sets expiration date for pink paper driving licenses

The traditional pink, three-fold paper driving license in France is set to become obsolete. Authorities have established a deadline of January 19, 2033, after which the old format will no longer be valid within French or European territory.

Adopted in 2013 to align with European harmonization standards, the new credit-card-sized license is more secure, durable, and includes an electronic chip. It is designed to be harder to forge and easier to use during roadside checks across Europe.

Drivers who fail to update to the new format by the deadline risk various penalties, including fines for failure to present a valid license, difficulties driving abroad, potential refusal of insurance or vehicle rentals, and administrative delays.
