France sick leave: Understanding waiting periods and compensation

In France, sick leave involves specific waiting periods, known as 'délai de carence', during which no compensation is paid. For daily allowances provided by the Health Insurance (Assurance Maladie), the waiting period is typically three calendar days, with payments beginning on the fourth day. For employer-provided salary supplements, the waiting period is generally seven days, with payments starting on the eighth day, provided seniority and collective agreement conditions are met.

These waiting periods include weekends and public holidays. However, certain circumstances can reduce or eliminate these delays, such as workplace accidents, occupational diseases, or long-term conditions (ALD).

To protect their rights, employees must adhere to specific administrative obligations, including transmitting the employer's portion of the sick leave certificate within 48 hours and sending the remaining sections to the Health Insurance fund. Additionally, for those with mortgage loans, borrower insurance may provide further financial coverage depending on the specific terms of the contract.
