France student protests spread across schools and universities FAST-MOVING

Student-led protests and school blockades have spread across France, targeting hundreds of secondary schools and universities. Demonstrators are demanding increased funding for education, more teaching staff, improved school facilities, and relief from the pressures of the Parcoursup admissions system.

In cities such as Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Lille, and Montpellier, the movement has escalated into significant unrest. Reports indicate that protesters have set fire to bins, damaged public transport, and blocked school entrances. In Marseille, incidents included the targeting of a firefighter vehicle and an assault on a school principal. In Nantes, a fire broke out at the entrance of Nelson Mandela high school.

Law enforcement has responded with significant force, leading to hundreds of arrests, many of whom are minors. Government officials have expressed concern over the rising violence. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez characterized the disturbances as ‘unbridled violence,’ while Education Minister Édouard Geffray condemned the actions as ‘indefensible,’ despite acknowledging the students' right to protest.
