France student protests spark misinformation regarding national flags

Social media posts claiming that no French flags were visible during recent student protests in France have been identified as misinformation. The viral videos, which gained over 100,000 views, falsely suggest that protesters in the 2026 demonstrations lacked national symbols.

Fact-checking reveals that the footage used in these posts actually originates from a May 2025 gathering in Paris. That specific event was a solidarity rally for Palestine and a condemnation of Israeli actions in Gaza, rather than the current wave of unrest. The footage shows participants holding Palestinian, Syrian, and Algerian flags.

The current unrest in France began in September 2026, initially driven by students protesting insufficient educational resources and staffing shortages. The movement subsequently expanded to include broader grievances regarding police violence, inequality, public spending, and the cost of living, leading to widespread riots and property damage in mid-October.
