France student protests spark widespread unrest and arrests
Widespread student and school-age protests have erupted across France, leading to significant civil unrest and property damage. Since the movement began on September 28, the Ministry of the Interior reports that 6,547 people have been arrested, with 488 arrests occurring during Tuesday's demonstrations alone.
Participation numbers vary by source. The Ministry of the Interior estimated 266,000 participants nationwide, including 56,000 in Paris. However, student organizers claim the turnout was much higher, reaching 450,000 people across the country, with 100,000 in the capital.
The protests have resulted in clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement. Reports indicate that at least 43 security officers have been injured, and authorities are investigating 18 cases of alleged police misconduct. While Interior Minister Laurent Nunez maintained that police actions have been proportionate, the National Consultative Commission on Human Rights expressed concern over the disproportionate use of violence.
Physical damage to infrastructure is extensive. Regional authorities have reported millions of euros in losses due to vandalism and arson at schools and public property. Estimates for the Île-de-France region alone reach 7 million euros, while the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region reports damages between 25 and 30 million euros. In response to the escalating situation, President Emmanuel Macron has convened meetings with government ministers to address the crisis.
