France Study Finds Median €20 Pocket Money for Kids, School Budgets Up
A large survey of more than 120,000 French children aged 6‑17, conducted by Money Walkie's Observatoire du Premier Euro, found that the median amount of pocket money given to children is €20 per month. The amount varies significantly with age – lower for younger children and higher for teenagers – and also shows strong regional differences, reflecting local cost‑of‑living variations.
Separately, a 2026 Cofidis poll reported that the average back‑to‑school budget per child has risen to €261, a 10 % increase from the previous year. The figure includes supplies, clothing, sports equipment and other items. The Familles de France barometer measured a standard school‑supplies basket at €211 for a child entering sixth grade, while the CAF’s estimate for the full school‑year cost ranges between €426 and €466. The surveys indicate growing pressure on French families’ purchasing power and shifting buying criteria, with lower emphasis on French origin and environmental factors compared with 2025.
