France: Sudanese man dies during attempt to reach UK

A 22-year-old Sudanese man died in northern France after a failed attempt to reach the United Kingdom by jumping onto a moving truck. The incident occurred on a highway near the Setck community during the night between Saturday and Sunday.

According to the Saint-Omer prosecutor's office, surveillance footage shows the man attempted to jump from a toll booth roof onto a truck but missed, falling onto the road behind the vehicle. While the man was transported to a hospital in Lille, he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday afternoon. The prosecutor noted that another individual managed to successfully jump onto a truck at the same location just seconds earlier.

Despite increased security measures around the Port of Calais and the Channel Tunnel, many individuals continue to attempt illegal crossings to the UK. While many migrants have recently used boats to cross the English Channel, others still attempt to climb onto heavy goods vehicles. Since the beginning of January, at least 19 people have died in France while attempting to reach the United Kingdom.
