France survivor pension rules require proactive application
In France, survivor pensions (pension de réversion) are not automatically granted to surviving spouses. Beneficiaries must proactively initiate the application process, as pension funds do not contact individuals following a death.
A critical factor in receiving benefits is the timing of the application. If a request is submitted within 12 months of the spouse's death, the allocation can be backdated to the first day of the month of death, allowing for a lump-sum payment of all elapsed months. However, if the application is made after this 12-month window, the effective date is set to the first day of the month in which the request was filed, resulting in the loss of previous months of payments.
Eligibility also depends on specific legal conditions. Under the general regime, marriage is a mandatory requirement; cohabitation (concubinage) or civil unions (Pacs) do not qualify a survivor for these benefits. Other factors influencing eligibility include the age of the survivor and the specific retirement scheme to which the deceased belonged.
