France: Suspect in Trappes shooting transferred for psychiatric observation

The French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) has suspended the custody of Kévin T., a 39-year-old suspect in a fatal shooting that occurred on Friday, October 23, in the Yvelines department near Paris. Following a psychiatric examination, the suspect was transferred to the psychiatric infirmary of the Paris Police Prefecture for a 48-hour observation period to determine if his mental state allows for continued interrogation.

The attack, which took place in the communes of Trappes and La Verrière, involved the suspect firing from a vehicle. The incident resulted in the death of 26-year-old Pengo Bossio Wangi and left five others injured, including a 12-year-old girl. Investigators are treating the case as a terrorist act with racist or Islamophobic motivations.

During searches of the suspect's residence in Plaisir, authorities discovered a copy of “Mein Kampf,” a Bible, and a Quran. The apartment was also found to be rigged with a trap consisting of three gas canisters and electrical wires connected to a timer. In the suspect's vehicle, a Sten submachine gun and tear gas canisters were recovered. Toxicological reports also revealed the presence of cannabis and cocaine in the suspect's blood. While the suspect's custody is suspended, the custody of four members of his family and social circle continues.
