France swimming pool regulations and installation trends
In France, homeowners installing swimming pools must navigate specific urban planning regulations to avoid legal infractions. While the French Urban Planning Code generally exempts pools smaller than 10 square meters from authorization, several exceptions apply. For instance, if a pool includes a fixed or mobile shelter exceeding 1.80 meters in height, a building permit is required regardless of the water surface area. Additionally, in protected heritage sites or near historical monuments, even small pools require a prior declaration.
As an alternative to traditional excavation, new installation trends are emerging, such as the use of repurposed maritime containers. These structures serve as a skeleton for a pool, where a fiberglass or reinforced PVC liner is installed inside a steel container to ensure watertightness. This method aims to provide a design-oriented swimming area without the extensive landscaping and earthworks typically required for in-ground pools.
