France tests social robots for Alzheimer's therapy
Clinics and nursing homes in France are testing the use of social robots and AI voices to support patients suffering from Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. At the Broca Hospital in Paris, elderly patients are participating in trials involving several different robotic devices.
One robot, NAO, is used to stimulate mental activity by asking questions and giving small tasks, such as asking patients to complete well-known proverbs. Another device, Paro, is a robotic seal equipped with sensors that reacts to movement and sound to provide therapeutic comfort. A third robot, Miroki, is designed to maintain contact through conversation.
Researchers at the Broca Living Lab report varied reactions from patients. While some are amazed by the technology, others clearly reject the use of robots, with some patients expressing a preference for human contact over robotic interaction.
