France theatre season 2026 features classical and contemporary works

The 2026-2027 theatre season in France is characterized by a dense program of both classical revivals and contemporary creations. In Paris, the Comédie-Française has announced a significant season featuring fourteen new creations. Notable upcoming productions at the Salle Richelieu include works such as Victor Hugo’s ‘Ruy Blas’, Calderón de la Barca’s ‘La vida es sueño’, and Marivaux’s ‘Les Fausses Confidences’. The programming also includes works by Annie Ernaux and Marguerite Duras.

Beyond the capital, cultural activity is expanding to regional cities like Lyon and Toulouse. In Toulouse, the Comédie de Toulouse will host the comedy-thriller ‘Ennemies pour la vie’ on September 25, 2026. Written by Lise Herbin and Nathalie Foucault, the play follows two women accused of murder and has previously seen success at the Avignon Festival.
