France to authorize municipal police to fine drivers refusing assistance dogs

Taxi and ride-hailing drivers in France continue to illegally refuse transport to individuals accompanied by guide or assistance dogs, as well as passengers with motor disabilities. While refusing assistance animals is illegal and carries a potential fine of 450 euros, reports suggest that actual enforcement remains rare.

To address this, the French government has announced that the authority to issue fines for such refusals will be transferred to municipal police. However, critics argue this move may be ineffective. They point out that municipal police services are only available in a small fraction of France's 35,000 communes and often operate with limited hours, unlike the national police and gendarmerie which provide 24/7 coverage across the entire territory.
