France to Ban Mobile Phones in High Schools from September 2026

The French Ministry of Education will require every lycée to prohibit the use of mobile phones, smart watches and certain tablets on school premises starting 1 September 2026. The measure expands the existing “digital pause” already applied in primary schools and colleges, aiming to reduce distractions, curb cyber‑harassment and promote face‑to‑face interaction.

The ban also forms part of a broader effort to limit screen exposure for youths. From the same date, anyone under 15 will be barred from creating accounts on major social‑media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and X, following a law adopted by Parliament in July 2026. Authorities cite research showing French 15‑19‑year‑olds spend over five hours daily in front of screens.

Implementation will be mandated through school regulations under article L. 511‑5 of the Education Code, and will apply to extracurricular activities, school trips and sports events as well.
