France deploys 70,000 police amid mass protests
French authorities have mobilized approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes across the country to manage a new wave of mass demonstrations. The security surge follows a period of intense unrest, including widespread looting and vandalism that damaged roughly 3,000 businesses.
Protests are being driven by public dissatisfaction regarding the rising cost of living, economic pressures, and deteriorating conditions within the education system. While some demonstrations, such as those organized by trade unions, have been authorized in cities like Paris, Marseille, and Strasbourg, authorities have prohibited gatherings in several other urban centers to prevent violence.
In Paris, the protest route was modified by police to run from Porte d’Italie to Porte de Vincennes to mitigate security risks. As a precaution, major cultural institutions including the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, and the Palace of Versailles have closed to the public. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that authorities will be “implacable with looters and rioters,” noting that over 135 arrests had already been recorded during the initial stages of the mobilization.
