France to Deploy Airbus A400M as High‑Capacity Firefighting Aircraft

Amid a severe forest‑fire season and a shortage of aging Canadair water‑bombers, France is preparing to use an Airbus A400M military transport plane for firefighting. The aircraft can be fitted with a removable kit that holds up to 20 000 litres of water or retardant, a capacity roughly three times that of a single Canadair.

The kit, tested in April 2025 at the Nîmes‑Garons base, allows rapid loading in under ten minutes and release through the rear ramp. Because the A400M can operate from short or unpaved runways and fly at night, it offers flexible, 24‑hour support for large fire fronts. Officials said the first operational drops could occur within the next 10‑15 days, complementing the existing fleet of twelve Canadair aircraft.

The initiative, announced by the director‑general of the French Civil Security agency after an inter‑ministerial crisis meeting, aims to bolster France’s fire‑fighting capabilities while a new generation of dedicated water‑bombers is not expected until 2028.
