France mobilizes 70,000 security forces for upcoming protests

French authorities are implementing significant security measures ahead of planned demonstrations on Saturday, October 24. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced the mobilization of approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes nationwide, supported by elite units, 20 Centaure armored vehicles, and 15 water cannons.

In response to recent violence, looting, and clashes that resulted in over 2,000 detentions and numerous injuries to emergency responders, President Emmanuel Macron has stated that "illegitimate" protests will be banned. While union-led demonstrations remain permitted, authorities may redirect their routes to protect commercial centers. Local restrictions include a ban on all planned protests in Lyon, Marseille, and Grenoble, as well as a curfew in specific Paris neighborhoods, such as around Place de la République and Les Halles, extending until Monday morning.

Cultural institutions are also taking precautions. The Ministry of Culture confirmed that the Louvre, Orsay, Picasso, Grand Palais, and Orangerie museums will remain closed on Saturday to ensure the safety of staff and the preservation of artworks. Additionally, the Art Basel Paris exhibition has modified its schedule due to unrest concerns.
