France to double medical franchise ceilings in October 2026
Starting in October 2026, France will implement a significant increase in healthcare costs for citizens. The annual ceiling for medical franchises and flat-rate contributions will double from 100 to 200 euros. This new limit is divided into 100 euros for medical franchises and 100 euros for flat-rate contributions.
This budgetary measure is expected to save the Social Security system between 500 million and 2.3 billion euros. However, it will directly impact approximately 13 million people living with long-term conditions (ALD). While these patients often benefit from 100% coverage for many treatments, they are not exempt from these specific medical franchises and flat-rate fees.
Additional changes include the reduction of coverage for 171 common medications and a decrease in Social Security reimbursement for dental care, which will drop to 50%. To offset some medical availability issues, the government has also announced a 3 million euro subsidy to support the installation of telemedicine kiosks in pharmacies and train stations.
