France to extend three‑year “nuisible” species list for shooting and trapping
The French government is preparing a decree to renew for three years the list of nine wildlife species classified as capable of causing damage – the so‑called “ESOD” list. The list, which includes the red fox, weasel, ferret, pine marten, raven, black crow, magpie, jay and starling, would allow these animals to be shot, trapped or, for foxes, dug out outside the regular hunting season.
A public consultation on the proposal attracted about 57,000 submissions. Environmental NGOs say the measure amounts to a “blind destruction” and intend to bring legal challenges before the Conseil d’État, while hunting organisations argue the list is necessary to protect poultry, crops and private property. The government stresses that the classification aims to prevent local damage, not to eradicate the species, which together account for the killing of roughly 1.7 million animals each year.
