France lose 2-1 to Ivory Coast in pre‑World Cup friendly

On June 4 2026 at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, France were beaten 2‑1 by Ivory Coast in a final warm‑up game before the 2026 World Cup. Rayan Cherki opened the scoring for the French side just before halftime. After the break, Guéla Doué equalised for the Elephants, and Amad Diallo secured the winner in the 84th minute.

Coach Didier Deschamps acknowledged the result as a “booster shot”, saying the defeat was a “clear setback” and a necessary reality check before the tournament. He also noted that the ten changes made at halftime disrupted the team’s cohesion. The loss dropped France from first to third in the FIFA rankings, overtaken by Argentina and Spain.

France will face Northern Ireland in Lille on June 8 before departing for the United States, where they open Group I against Senegal on June 16. The match highlighted concerns about defensive organization and the integration of rotated players, many of whom were absent after the Champions League final.
