France to increase annual wolf culling quota by 10%

French Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard has announced a 10% increase in the annual quota for authorized wolf killings to address rising predator attacks on livestock. The new regulation will allow for the elimination of 22 additional wolves, raising the annual cull from 19% to 21% of the estimated population. Genevard stated that the current regulation is no longer adapted to the expanding territory and growing numbers of wolves.

The decision comes amid significant pressure from farmers facing financial and psychological strain due to attacks. Reports indicate over 4,000 attacks have been recorded, resulting in the deaths of more than 12,000 animals. While official statistics suggest the wolf population has remained relatively stable, some breeders and observers argue the numbers are being underestimated, noting that sightings are expanding beyond Alpine regions into areas like Hauts-de-France and the Var coast.

Some agricultural groups, such as the Drôme sheep breeders' federation, have criticized the measure as insufficient, claiming it will not resolve the increasing rate of livestock losses despite the use of protection dogs and fencing.
