France to launch joint flu and COVID-19 vaccination campaign

France is set to launch a joint vaccination campaign against influenza and COVID-19 on October 13, 2026. Health authorities are prioritizing reinforced vaccines for seniors aged 65 and older to combat seasonal mortality and low vaccination rates, which stood at 53.7% among seniors last year, well below the 75% target.

The Haute Autorité de santé (HAS) recommends high-dose or adjuvanted vaccines, such as Efluelda and Fluad, to better stimulate immune responses in older populations. While standard vaccines like Vaxigrip remain available, the focus is on improving coverage to prevent avoidable hospitalizations.

However, the campaign faces potential logistical challenges. Pharmacist unions have warned of a possible shortage of syringes and needles. With COVID-19 and flu consultations already rising, there are concerns that exhausted or expired stocks in health facilities could lead to supply issues for pharmacies, potentially hindering the vaccination rollout.
