France to phase out pink paper driving licenses by 2033

The traditional pink, three-fold paper driving license in France is scheduled to be phased out by January 19, 2033. While current holders can continue to use the old document as long as it remains legible and in good condition, authorities are encouraging drivers to transition to the new credit card-sized format early to prevent administrative bottlenecks near the deadline.

To facilitate this transition, the replacement process is currently free of charge when requested through the Agence nationale des titres sécurisés (ANTS) website. Previously, replacing a license was typically reserved for cases of loss, theft, or damage and often incurred a fee. The new format is more secure, compact, and requires renewal every 15 years for standard categories, though no new driving exam is required.

Applicants must provide proof of identity, proof of residence, and a compliant identity photo via the official ANTS platform. Additionally, the modernization includes digital integration, allowing the license to be stored in the France Identité application for smartphone access.
