France to reimburse obesity drugs Wegovy and Mounjaro

From mid‑June 2026 France will reimburse the GLP‑1 obesity treatments Wegovy (Novo Nordisk) and Mounjaro (Eli Lilly) for patients with a BMI of 40 or higher, or 35 with a serious comorbidity. The reimbursement rate is set at 65%, but most patients are expected to receive close to 100% coverage because they qualify for additional support.

Health Minister Stéphanie Rist said the measure will target about one million adults, representing roughly 18% of the French adult population, and will cost the social security system around €100 million per year once prescriptions stabilise. Prescriptions are limited to specialised obesity centres, and doctors must combine the drugs with a reduced‑calorie diet and increased physical activity. France is the first EU member state to fund these injectables publicly, aiming to lower long‑term costs linked to untreated obesity.
