France to reimburse Wegovy and Mounjaro for obesity treatment starting Monday

From Monday, France's health insurance will cover 65% of the cost of the GLP‑1 anti‑obesity drugs Wegovy and Mounjaro for patients with massive obesity or severe obesity with comorbidities. Only doctors working in specialised obesity centres may issue the first prescription, and a secure form must accompany the order. The reimbursement will standardise prices across pharmacies, which previously varied. The Ministry estimates up to one million people could be eligible, with a projected expense of about €100 million for the health system by 2027. While the policy aims to expand access, many patients are expected to continue paying out‑of‑pocket, and pharmacies report a steady flow of individuals already self‑funding the treatment. The market for obesity drugs in France, launched eighteen months ago, has already surpassed €150 million and continues to grow, prompting discussions about future oral formulations and broader insurer coverage.
