Corsica transport workers strike over maritime jobs and pilot pay
Transport workers in Corsica are engaging in industrial action affecting both maritime and aviation sectors. At the Port of Bastia, STC union members are striking against the chartering of the vessel Massalia. The union argues that using an external crew for the Massalia, combined with the planned decommissioning of several Corsica Linea ships this winter, threatens maritime employment. They claim the decision could result in the loss of at least 90 jobs and are demanding the preservation of permanent and fixed-term contracts.
Simultaneously, pilots at Air Corsica have issued a strike notice for the period of October 9 to October 16, 2026. The Syndicat national des pilotes de ligne (SNPL) and the Syndicat des pilotes de l’aviation civile (SPAC) cited unsuccessful negotiations regarding salary progression and inflation. The unions noted that pilots had previously accepted wage freezes and reduced leave to support the company, but current management proposals regarding seniority-based pay are deemed unacceptable. The pilots have proposed a four-year agreement with a delayed implementation to accommodate the airline's current fleet challenges.
