France trial begins for suspected smugglers in deadly Channel migrant disaster

A trial has commenced in a Parisian court involving 14 men accused of smuggling-related charges following the deadliest recorded migrant disaster in the English Channel. The incident occurred on November 24, 2021, when an inflatable dinghy deflated while attempting to reach the United Kingdom, resulting in the deaths of at least 31 migrants and asylum seekers.

The victims included nationals from Iraq, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Vietnam, with ages ranging from seven to 46. Prosecutors allege the defendants launched a “substandard small boat, uncertified, unfit for navigation on the open sea, overcrowded and lacking appropriate life jackets.”

The defendants face charges including manslaughter and “facilitating illegal immigration as part of an organised gang.” While nine suspects were present at the opening of the trial, two others are being tried in absentia. The proceedings are expected to last approximately three weeks, with 114 civil parties, including families of the victims, participating in the trial.
